Beware - the overlook pullout is not in the same place as the trail head parking area! However, both are well marked, and I fully agree that the hike down to the confluence of the Yellowstone River and Hellroaring Creek is among the very best 6-milers (round-trip) in Yellowstone. Keep in mind, much of it is not shaded, you cross a fair amount of open sage, so take a hat and lots of water. The last mile (?) back out is all uphill, so save enough energy to get up to your car!
Photo taken last September, where the two rivers join, after a year (or years) of very low precipitation. I would expect in 2008 that the water levels will be much, much higher, but it will still be a gorgeous spot. We missed it but some people who were fishing down there told us a bison forded the river just before we got there. Wonderful spot!!
