Dear Marcia,
No matter how FEW ppl actually show up this year, YP will still be "loved to death". That has to happen to fit the template of overcrowding. Overcrowding paves the way to such social engineering concepts as ma ss transit, which is what the NPS really wants in YP.
So if only 2.9 million show up because of the price of gasoline, the NPS will just skew the numbers at the gates to achieve the outcome the want.
You see, the multiplier such as 1.8 or 4.2 per car in the visitor lanes at the gates, could easily be increased to whatever they want it to be.
For instance, Chatter Marcia enters the North Gate at 1 PM, forgets snacks, u-turns back to Gardiner, gets snacks, re-enters park. You just entered two times the factor for that day. The factor is never just 1 - it is always 1 point something on the slowest winter days; and 4 point someting on the summer days.
The NPS just counted atleast 3 ppl entering when only one enterd.
