planning my first trip to Yellowstone

I'm planning to take my son on a trip in early June to see Yellowstone. Of course this is sort of last minute... no reservations other than standby airline tickets into/out of Bozeman at this point. But I'm choosing to see the positives here... we are flexible on our dates, and really looking forward to the wildlife & geological drama. Also I have cousins who live in Ennis and Dillon, so would like to spend a bit of time catching up with them.

Any advice on where to stay, where to start, what to see? My son (18) is a big wildlife aficianado and plans to major in geology. We are thinking of extending/expanding our trip to include the Tetons.
