In the winter, the guided snow-mobile tours are scheduled to arrive in time for everyone to see an eruption, have lunch, and go on their way. Check out the cam between eruptions to see what it looks like the rest of the time. In nice summer weather, there will always be plenty of folks wandering around the Upper Geyser Basin, and several hundred around Old Faithful for eruption time, espec ially late-morning through evening.
You won't be "fighting" either winter or summer crowds around old Faithful or 15+ miles from Old Faithful in September. What time of month are you thinking of going? Every day past Labor Day brings fewer to the park, espec ially during the week.
Early morning is always a good time to beat the competi tion to the sights. Then get off the road, away from the popular attractions, and onto the trails, and you'll leave the crowds behind in no time.
Here's a capture from September 25, 2009, with Lion in full eruption behind Old Faithful. Is this more within your comfort level?
