Hi Susan,
I think that staying in two or three locations is the best bet
as moving every day can be a big hassle. Canyon should definitely
be a stopover for all the reasons Bruce indicated. I would caution
you on having any expectations of seeing grizzlies during your stay
as bear locations are less predictable in the Fall. I have
managed to see grizzlies each of the last five Septembers, but the sitings
were scattered all over the park so it's difficult to offer a
specific location.
As for Lamar Valley, there should be lot's of wildlife out there, but
there are no guarantees of close encounters. If you are interested in seeing
wolves, then Lamar Valley is a good place to start, but be sure to bring your
binoculars and/or spotting scopes - they will most likely be several hundred
yards away.
And don't forget about the west side of the park in the Fall. There are
good opportunities to see all sorts of wildlife in any of the meadows between Mammoth
and West Yellowstone, particularly at Willow Park, in the meadows around Norris
Junction and in the Madison River Valley. I will be in the park later on in September,
and I will set up camp in Mammoth for the duration of my stay as accomodations at
Canyon will be closed.
Hope this helps..... have a great time!
