Dear Yanos:
Unfortunately there is no bus shuttle system functioning inside the Park. That means you would have to go on a designated tour bus or hitch-hike for rides to where you want to go. Hitching a ride is legal in the Park. I dream of the day when there will be a shuttle system from one village to another within the Park. I have even talked to some National Park Service employees in the Planning Office at Mammoth about my ideas. I had a very interesting conversation with them in June, 1997 and perhaps my ideas will have some impact on any future planning in regards to transportation within the Park. As far as hitching rides, I've done it and I know others who have done it. You have to be patient as often there is no room in passing cars for an extra person. Please try an position yourself so that the cars have somewhere to pull off the road to pick you up. Usually there are pull-offs located all along the road. There are some places where you would have to walk miles to get to a pull-off, however.
Hope you have a good trip in YNP.
Sincerely,
Mardell Moore
