Just returned from Yellowstone Park, and wanted to share a few tips for those on their way. My husband and I had visited Yellowstone several times, although not since 1989. We decided to fly west (from Indiana), and drive from Salt Lake City to show our six year old daughter the wonders of Yellowstone and other parks in the West. As always, Yellowstone was beautiful... however... some observations from some weary travelers:

Avoid the East Gate if at all possible!!! The 30 minute delays we expected. We did not expect the terrible road and driving conditions and the MUD. Those driving motor homes beware - the one in front of us lost a holding tank from the rough ride. We had to have a tire repaired (rental car), and drove into West Yellowstone to wash off the mud because we couldn't get in or out, or see out passenger windows. The mud was truly that bad. We made it through the East park gates, but turned around about five miles outside the East gate. The road construction on the way to Cody got worse and worse and we finally gave up. The construction from Madison to Old Faithful causes some delay, but it isn't really a problem.

We drove into Hayden Valley two evenings to enjoy the wildlife. There is a very large herd of bison, elk, etc. However, traffic was extremely heavy and congested. Start early and find a place to park, or expect to spend considerable time crawling through the valley. Don't forget the take a good pair of binoculars.

We had "Frontier" cabin reservations at both Lake Yellowstone and Canyon Village. Last time we were in Yellowstone, we were driving our motor home and really enjoyed the campground. Don't expect much from the cabins. We found them very shabby and dirty on the inside (furniture falling apart, insects smashed all over walls, bedding worn thin, carpets and bedspreads dirty, etc.), and in poor repair outside (peeling paint, loose steps, weeds everywhere). It was worth it for us to be able to enjoy the park all evening; however, it you are looking for creature comforts... better stay elsewhere.

Our six year old enjoyed her first visit to Yellowstone. Be sure to have back seat diversions planned for travel time between sights, and be sure to take a raincoat, jacket and sturdy shoes. If you buy a "kids meal" at any of the park restaurants, the food is served on a bright red frisbee - which was very popular!!

One of our goals was to spot a bear - which we have never been able to do. Maybe next time!

One more tip for those roaming the Wild Wild West. If you're also headed to Mesa Verde, be sure to get there in the morning. Because of the number of visitors, most of the ranger led tours are reserved before noon. There are still things to see, but you miss the more popular tours if you don't get there early!
