: I am planning on a solo camping/hiking trip (3 days in the park).
: I have read the YellowStone Pages, etc., but I wanted to get some
: expert/experienced advice on how/where/rules/permits, etc.
: I plan to fly into Bozeman, MT, rent a car, drive to the Canyon
: campgrounds and start from there. I would like to camp near
: people the first day, to meet/discuss YellowStone trials/experiences, however,
: I would like to spend days 2 and 3 in more remote areas.
: Of course I would love to wildlife watch (brown bear and bison), but
: i'm not expecting the Discovery Channel.
: What I would like to know is..
: 1) Can I get camping (tent) reservations in advance, who do i call?
: 2) Where are the semi-populated camping areas within hiking distance
: of a good wildlife watching area?
: 3) What town is the closer, for flying in?
: Thank you in advance.
Dear Tony:

Call AmFac to reserve a one night stay in the Canyon Campground. Their Phone # 1-307-344-7311 their Fax # 1-307-344-7456. I enjoy the National Park Service campground better than the AnFac ones because they are smaller and less crowded as a generl rule. Tower campground is small and close to a store and also close to good wildlife viewing areas. Another nice small campground is Indian Creek just about 8 miles south of Mammoth. The Hayden valley is a great place for wildlife viewing. The closest airport to YNP is located in West Yellowstone, however, it is very expensive to fly into that location. The next close in airport is the airport at Jackson Hole , Wy in the Grand Tetons NP. You have saved yourself a lot of money by flying into Bozeman. Some people find it even more economical to fly to Salt Lake City Utah, because it is a hub airport for certain airlines and rent and drive a car from there.
Hope you have a wonderful time.
Sincerely,
Mardell Moore
