Yellowstone Earthquake Information - What's Shakin?

    Monday - 22 Jan 2007

The East, South and West Entrances opened to winter activities at 8:00 am 20 December. Visitors can enter the park through these entrances via ski, snowshoe, snowcoach or snowmobile. Snowcoach or snowmobile travel is via a guided tour only. The North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana is open to wheeled vehicle travel year round. We have had snow storms blow in and out this month, but the road (North Entrance to the Northeast Entrance) is open and maintained for vehicle travel into the park.

We had good winter temps and snow levels until the 21st of December. At which time it warmed up to just about 50 degrees and started to rain. There is a winter storm on its way that should improve winter conditions.

Wildlife watching in Lamar Valley is great as usual. The wolf packs have been visible lately, Agate Pack, Druid Pack and Slough Creek Pack.

The East, South and West Entrances closed at 8:00 AM on 07 November 2005. They will reopen on 21 December 2005 for oversnow winter activities and travel. This will include crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing, snowcoach and snowmobile travel from all entrances. The roads from the East, South and West Entrances typically open to oversnow travel on the third Wednesday in December each year.

Visitors are enjoying the Mammoth Visitor Center and Mammoth Hot Springs area. Folks are also enjoying watching antelope, bison, elk, deer, wolves and other wildlife this time of year from the North Entrance to the Northeast Entrance.

Please be aware that vehicle travel at times may require snow tires or chains depending on winter driving conditions.

The North and West Entrances are open. The roads are plowed and dry. The weather has been changing from week to week. One week warm and sunny the next week winter and snowy. Right now it is nice with scattered clouds and somewhat warm with temps just about in the 50's in Gardiner and the low 40's at Old Faithful.

Bison are calving and spring wildlife is abundant with antelope, bighorn sheep, bears, bison, elk, coyotes and wolves being seen and enjoying in Little America (east of Roosevelt), and Lamar Valley.

    Saturday - 19 March 2005

The North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana is open and folks are driving in and having a great time watching wildlife - antelope, bears, bighorn sheep, bison, coyotes, deer, eagles, elk, otters, wolves and more. It is a great time for viewing spring wildlife and enjoying the great outdoors in Yellowstone.

The East, South and West Entrances are closed to over-snow winter activities. The Park Service is busy plowing the roads and getting ready for the spring opening on Friday, 22 April 2005. You CANNOT drive into the park from these entrances, you cannot get to Old Faithful or other areas of the park from the East, South or West Entrances.

You will be able to bike, hike, roller blade or skate board on the park roads very soon. There will be very limited vehicle travel up until the spring park opening. There will be some admin vehicle travel for folks working in the park, so be careful. Also, please note, that you CANNOT do any of these activities between Madison or Madison Junction to Old Faithful.

The North Entrance (at Gardiner, Montana) and Northeast Entrance (at Silver Gate, Montana) are Open for visitation Year Round. These are the Only Entrances to Yellowstone that are Open Year Round. Please note that there is no eastbound travel from Cooke City, Montana until the roads are plowed later in the spring. Thusday - 16 December 2004

The North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana is open year round to visitors who would like to drive into the park. Visitors can drive from the North Entrance to Mammoth Hot Springs and from Mammoth across the northern area of the park to Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana. This route takes you to and through Lamar Valley, one of the best wildlife viewing areas in Yellowstone.

The East and South Entances opened yesterday to over snow travel. The opening is somewhat limited due to poor snow conditions. The West Entrance opened yesterday with limited travel by park approved vehicles and companies with winter tour permits.

    Yellowstone Press Release

    2004-2005 Winter Season Update

Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Suzanne Lewis announced that the park will open for the winter season beginning Wednesday, December 15, 2004, from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm daily. However, due to minimal snow accumulations throughout the park, certain limitations will be implemented. Oversnow vehicle access will be allowed in some areas and wheeled vehicle or rubber tracked snowcoach access in others. Oversnow, wheeled, and rubber tracked snowcoach vehicle access will be provided by winter commercial permittees only; the general public will not be allowed to drive their personal vehicles into the park. All visitors with reservations at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge will be accommodated.

Oversnow vehicle traffic will be allowed on the South and East Entrance roads to Old Faithful. Access from the West Entrance and Mammoth to Old Faithful will be via wheeled vehicle and rubber tracked snowcoaches. The road from Norris to Canyon and Canyon to Lake will not open due to unsafe conditions.

During the 2004-2005 winter season, the following will be implemented:

    • A total of 720 snowmobiles will be allowed in the park each day: 400 through the West Entrance, 220 through the South Entrance, 40 through the East Entrance, 30 through the North Entrance, and 30 at Old Faithful.

    • All snowmobiles must be commercially guided.

    • All commercially guided operators will be required to use snowmobiles that meet the NPS best available technology (BAT) requirements. The list of approved BAT snowmobiles is available on the parks Web site at http://www.nps.gov/yell/planvisit/todo/winter/.

    • Snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park will continue to be restricted to traveling on roads and parking lots specifically groomed for their use. Off-road travel, sidehilling, or berm-riding is prohibited.

    • Snowmobiles will continue to be prohibited on specific side roads including the Fountain Flat Road, Virginia Cascades Drive, North Canyon Rim Drive, Riverside Drive and the road from Canyon Junction to Washburn Hot Springs Overlook. Snowmobiles would be allowed on the Lake Butte Road and, after 12:00 pm each day, on the Firehole Canyon Drive.

    • All snowmobile operators are required to have a valid drivers license; no learner permits are allowed.
Superintendent Lewis cautioned that because snow accumulations are minimal in some areas of the park, conditions for winter snowmobiling and snow coach travel are less than ideal. New snow accumulations would obviously improve conditions so that normal winter operations could begin. Conversely, a warming situation would worsen the already marginal conditions and could result in further restrictions.

The road from the parks North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana, to the Northeast Entrance at Cooke City, Montana, is the only road open year-round to automobile traffic. The road is subject to temporary closures, and chains or snow tires may be required at any time due to hazardous winter driving conditions.

Visitors are encouraged to call park headquarters at: 307-344-7381 for the latest road and weather conditions.

Visitors can also enjoy all these winter activities from Mammoth Hot Springs near the North Entrance as well as great wildlife viewing in Lamar Valley.

Visitors can stay in Gardiner, Montana and drive into the park at any time and enjoy the thermal features at Mammoth Hot Springs and the wildlife from the North Entrance to Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana. Please note the travel east of Cooke City is not possible as the road will not be plowed or maintained for winter travel.

Have fun and enjoy the rest of fall and winter in Yellowstone's Wonderland!

    Thursday - 23 September 2004

Fall is here and the temps have been cooler than usual and moisture has been more than normal. It has helped to easy the drought a little and has kept the fires down to a bare minimum. The North, Northeast, South and West Entrances are all open 24/7 as usual (except for some temporary snow closures. The East Entrance (to and from Cody, Wyoming) is open from 6:00 am to 10:00 am and 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm ONLY.

The road from Tower Falls to Canyon is CLOSED due to construction. The road from Tower Falls to Mount Washburn is open. All other roads are open including the Beartooth Highway.

Wildlife is very visible in the park at this time. Elk are in the rut and can be seen from the North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana to Mammoth. Bears and wolves are very visible from Elk Creek / Petrified Tree to Tower and from Roosevelt to the Northeast Entrance. Lamar Valley has been a great area for bears and wolves.

Have a great time and enjoy fall in the Stone!

    Tuesday - 27 April 2004

The North and West Entrances are open. Spring has arrived and it is a great time to visit the park and enjoy the wildlife and thermal features! Wildlife is abundant from the North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana to the Northeast Entrance at Silver Gate, Montana! That includes but not limited to antelope, bears, birds, bison, deer, elk, marmots and wolves. The crowds are very small and the weather and wildlife watching is fantastic! A great time to visit and be in the park.

    Tuesday - 16 March 2004

The North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana is open for visitors to the park. The East, South and West Entrances are closed. The park service is plowing the roads and getting ready for these entrances to open this spring. The West Entrance is scheduled to open at 8:00 AM on Friday, 16 April 2004. The North Entrance is Open Year Round for vehicle traffic and visitors.

The first bear sighting was reported to have taken place last Saturday, 13 March. A grizzly bear was sighted in the Norris area.

Wildlife viewing is still fantastic in Lamar Valley for those who are interested in watching wolves and maybe even bears now that spring is approching!
