ROADS SCHEDULED TO OPEN IN YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Spring in Yellowstone National Park is an opportunity for park visitors to explore and enjoy the park's spectacular wildlife and scenery, especially with park interior roads starting to open (subject to road and weather conditions) to motor vehicles on Friday, April 18, 2003. Roads are scheduled to open at 8 a.m. on the day listed: The North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana, to the Northeast Entrance at Cooke City, Montana, is open year-round to motor vehicles.

There are limited facilities and services available this time of the year. On April 18, the Old Faithful Basin Upper Store and Old Faithful Lower Service Station will open. The Canyon Nature Store opens on April 25. The Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Old Faithful Snow Lodge, along with the dining room facilities, open on May 2. The Fishing Bridge General Store opens on May 3. The Mammoth General Store, Mammoth Clinic, and Mammoth campground remain open year-round. All other facilities and campgrounds remain closed until their scheduled opening dates throughout May and June.

Several road construction projects are scheduled throughout the park. Visitors should be prepared for delays and closures. Road construction projects and schedules are listed below.

Madison Junction to Norris Junction:

Road construction will begin April 15 and continue to mid-September. The road will be open 24 hours a day with 30-minute delays. It will be open without delays during holiday weedends. The first phase of this road project should be complete by mid-September, and the road will remain open until it closes as scheduled in November.

Canyon Junction to Tower Junction (Dunraven Pass):

The road north from Canyon Junction to the Chittenden Road on Dunraven Pass will be closed all season. Visitors will still be able to access the Chittenden Road from the Tower Junction side; the road south of Tower Junction will remain open.

Canyon Junction to Fishing Bridge Junction (Hayden Valley):

Beginning early spring: OPEN with 30-minute delays from 5 a.m. to midnight
After July 4: OPEN with possible one-hour delays from midnight to 5 a.m.
