SEARCH FOR MISSING MAN CONCLUDES

October 16, 2003 ~ PR 03-124

A search in the Slough Creek area of the northeast section of Yellowstone National Park ended with the recovery of a body earlier this afternoon. The search began yesterday afternoon (October 15, 2003) when several notes were found in an abandoned vehicle, indicating an intention to commit suicide.

A red 2000 Chevy Blazer was first noted among several other vehicles at a Slough Creek parking area on Sunday, October 12, 2003. When the vehicle was still there on Wednesday, October 15, park rangers checked the vehicle, noticed the license plates were missing, and began an investigation. In searching the vehicle, several suicide notes were discovered.

An extensive search was immediately initiated. More than 12 park staff and two search dog teams were involved. The body was located today around 1:00 pm approximately two miles north of the Slough Creek trailhead.

The body has been tentatively identified, but positive identification should be completed by Friday. The name of the victim will not be released until that time. An ongoing investigation is continuing.
